Essential information
- Test all four skills on unfamiliar material before choosing a study priority.
- Classify errors by cause, not only by skill or score.
- Rank problems by impact, frequency, and repairability.
- Retest the same mechanism on a new Pack Ayoub subject after correction.

What you need to know
A useful TCF Canada diagnostic does not end with four percentages. It reveals the operation that breaks down in each skill: following a correction in an audio extract, locating proof in a text, covering every instruction in writing, or developing an answer without losing the thread in speaking.
This Pack Ayoub protocol gives you a complete first picture in two sessions. You will leave with a ranked list of problems, an error notebook, and a seven-day plan based on evidence rather than intuition. Repeat the same protocol every two weeks to measure whether your corrections transfer to unfamiliar subjects.
Session one: collect clean evidence from all four skills
Choose unfamiliar material and work without opening a correction, dictionary, or model answer. Complete one representative listening set, one reading set, one writing task, and one recorded speaking task. Preserve the exact conditions: note the time, interruptions, unanswered items, and moments when you guessed or changed strategy.
A correct answer is not always secure knowledge. Mark answers chosen by elimination without evidence, words you did not recognise in the audio, and passages that required several readings. In productive work, underline every part of the instruction and verify whether the final response actually performed it.
- Listening: record missed sounds, changes of speaker, corrected details, and unsupported inferences.
- Reading: record the proof line, the tempting distractor, and the word or relationship you misunderstood.
- Writing: check purpose, recipient, required content, paragraph function, language control, and length.
- Speaking: check relevance, interaction, development, examples, pace, pronunciation, and recurring hesitation.
Session two: classify causes instead of counting mistakes
Review every significant error and choose one primary cause. Use categories you can act on: vocabulary, sound recognition, evidence selection, instruction analysis, organisation, grammar, fluency, timing, or attention. ‘I am bad at listening’ is too broad; ‘I lose the new information after the speaker corrects a number’ already suggests an exercise.
Separate knowledge from process. If you knew the vocabulary but read the option too quickly, the repair is not another vocabulary list. If your argument was good but the response ignored the audience, the priority is task analysis and register. This distinction prevents hours of study that never touch the real problem.
Rank priorities with impact, frequency, and repairability
Give each recurring problem three scores from one to three. Impact measures how much the problem damages the task. Frequency measures how often it appears. Repairability measures whether focused practice can change it within your current timeline. Add the scores, then choose one main priority and one secondary priority for the next seven days.
Keep the other skills alive with short maintenance sessions. The objective is not to abandon a strong skill; it is to stop giving comfortable activities the time needed by a weaker mechanism. Pack Ayoub’s collection lets you repeat the same operation across different topics, which is essential for testing transfer.
The diagnostic record to keep for every attempt
| Evidence | Question to answer | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Result | What happened? | Three reading items wrong; writing conclusion missing |
| Cause | Why did it happen? | Confused concession with cause; no final task checklist |
| Repair | What operation will I practise? | Contrast connectors; two-minute completeness review |
| Transfer | How will I prove the repair? | New text and new writing prompt completed unaided |
Original Pack Ayoub example: from a vague weakness to a precise drill
Practice exercise
A learner scores 24/39 in listening and writes: ‘I need more listening practice.’ How can the diagnostic become actionable?
Suggested answer
Review shows that five errors occur after a speaker rejects or corrects an earlier detail. The learner’s seven-day priority becomes: identify contrast and self-correction markers in short extracts, write the final detail immediately, then complete a new timed listening set without pausing.
Why this answer works
The numerical result identifies the skill, but the error pattern identifies the training operation.
The transfer attempt verifies whether the learner can apply the correction without seeing the same answers again.
Convert the diagnostic into a seven-day cycle
- 1
Day 1 — isolate
Study the mechanism on a short exercise and explain the correct decision in your own words.
- 2
Day 2 — repeat
Complete several small variations while the correction method is still visible.
- 3
Day 3 — produce
Apply the mechanism in a writing or speaking response when relevant.
- 4
Day 5 — transfer
Use an unfamiliar subject with no correction open and preserve the result.
- 5
Day 7 — decide
Compare the evidence, retain the priority if it remains unstable, or promote the next ranked problem.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a TCF Canada diagnostic take?
Use two focused sessions: one to collect work in all four skills and one to review causes. A rushed score without analysis is less useful than a smaller but carefully documented sample.
Should I use my best or weakest result to plan?
Use the recurring mechanism with the greatest impact on the skill targets you need. One unusually weak result should be confirmed on another unfamiliar task before it controls the whole plan.
How often should I repeat the diagnostic?
A two-week interval is practical for most learners. It allows enough targeted work to create a visible change while keeping the plan responsive.
What does Pack Ayoub add to the diagnostic?
Its 2019–2026 collection, saved history, unlimited simulations, and AI feedback let you preserve the first attempt, analyse it, and test the same mechanism on new material.
