Speaker, intention, time, condition, point of view: five questions that cover almost every recording and that you can catch by ear through signal words.
Before, during and after the listen: a precise routine to choose the right option without getting stuck on a question.
The repeated word, the corrected detail, the wrong speaker, true but off-topic, over-inference: five traps decoded, plus numbers, dates and sounds that look alike.
One unaided listen, a correction, a replay and a sentence from memory: a short daily practice you can measure.
For every recording your ear looks for five things. They cover almost every question, and each one announces itself through signal words that are easy to catch. Before looking at the options, ask yourself: « qui, pourquoi, quand, sous quelle condition, qu'en pense-t-il ? » The exam is in French, so the signal words below are in French with their English meaning.
The guide illustrates each marker with extracts, the mistake to avoid and the training that makes these five questions automatic in two weeks.
For every recording, before looking at the options:
Speaker
« Qui donne cette information ? » Signaux : les prénoms, « moi », « tu / vous », « selon… »
Who is giving this information? Listen for first names, “me”, “you”, “according to…”
Intention
« Je voudrais… », « Il faut… », « Vous pourriez… », « Malheureusement… »
A request, an obligation, advice, a complaint: is the speaker informing, asking, advising or complaining?
Time
« hier », « demain », « finalement », « on a changé »
Yesterday, tomorrow, finally, we changed: is the fact past, planned or changed?
Condition
« si », « à condition que », « sauf si », « au cas où »
If, provided that, unless, in case: what is needed for the action to happen?
Point of view
« certes… mais », « pourtant », « ça dépend »
Admittedly… but, yet, it depends: is the opinion favourable, reserved or critical?
