Essential information

  • Prepare flexible personal themes instead of a fixed biography.
  • Answer the question first, then add a relevant detail and example.
  • Repeat with changed wording to test whether your preparation remains natural.

What you need to know

Task 1 is a guided interview about you. Build flexible material around studies, work, family, interests, experience, and plans, then practise answering different questions without reciting one fixed speech.

Use a direct answer, one useful detail, and a short example. Record the result, check pace and clarity, then repeat with a new follow-up question so your preparation remains adaptable.

Prepare a map of personal themes

Organise useful language around identity, studies, work, daily life, interests, past experience, and future plans. For every theme, prepare two precise details and one short example.

Keep answers expandable

Start with a direct response, add a reason or detail, and stop at a natural point. This structure lets you answer briefly or expand when the examiner asks for more information.

Review delivery as well as language

Record yourself and check pace, intelligibility, hesitation, and repeated phrases. Repeat the same set of questions on another day without reading your previous answer. Flexibility is the real test of preparation.

Answer the question instead of reciting a biography

Practice exercise

Question: ‘What do you enjoy about your neighbourhood?’ A learner begins with their name, age and complete employment history. How could the answer be refocused?

Suggested answer

I especially like being able to walk to useful places. There is a market ten minutes from my apartment and a small library nearby. On Saturdays, I often shop and then spend an hour reading there, so I can go out without planning a long journey.

Why this answer works

The response answers immediately, supplies two concrete places and explains why they matter to the speaker.

Prepared personal information is selected according to the question rather than delivered in a fixed order.

Construct an answer that can expand naturally

  1. 1

    Direct response

Answer the exact question in one sentence.

  2. 2

    Relevant detail

Add who, where, when or how often only when it supports the response.

  3. 3

    Concrete example

Describe one short event, habit or choice.

  4. 4

    Natural stopping point

Finish the idea and allow the examiner’s next question to guide the exchange.

Review delivery and language separately

On the first replay, check relevance, pace and whether the listener can follow the answer. On the second, choose one language pattern that repeatedly causes hesitation. Repair a short passage, then answer a differently worded question without reading.

Do not edit a recording until it sounds memorised. The purpose is to communicate flexibly in real time, not to produce one flawless audio file.

Change the prompt while preserving the operation

If you prepared a description of your work, answer questions about what you enjoy, what is difficult, how a typical day begins and what you hope to change. The facts may overlap, but the organising idea should follow each question.

Ask a partner to interrupt with simple follow-ups. This reveals whether your answer leaves room for interaction or depends on completing a script.

Practise the same theme through different questions

A work theme might produce questions about your daily role, a challenge, a recent change, a useful skill or a future plan. Answering all of them from one memorised introduction would miss their different centres.

Use the same personal facts selectively, then change the reason or example according to the question. This preserves authenticity while training flexibility.

Keep task 1 connected to the complete speaking test

Task 1 preparation should not consume every oral session because it feels predictable. Maintain interaction practice for task 2 and argument development for task 3.

Use a short personal-theme review as a warm-up, then move to a less controllable exchange. This prevents comfort with introductions from being mistaken for complete speaking readiness.

Build a personal language bank you can actually vary

For each theme, prepare verbs, time references and two ways to explain a reason. Add one real or fictionalised example that is safe to share. Avoid rare expressions you cannot adapt when the tense or subject changes.

Revisit the bank through questions rather than silent memorisation. Change the time frame from present routine to past experience or future plan, and replace one detail while preserving grammatical control.

Frequently asked questions

Should I memorise a two-minute introduction?

No. Prepare themes, details and development patterns, then respond to the wording you actually hear.

How long should each answer be?

Long enough to answer and develop the question, but short enough to remain responsive. Avoid turning every prompt into an uninterrupted speech.

What should I record during practice?

Record short sets of varied questions. Review relevance, clarity, hesitation and one recurring language issue at a time.
