Essential information

  • Turn the role card into an information map before speaking.
  • Prepare flexible question functions instead of a memorised script.
  • Use the interlocutor’s answer to create precise follow-ups.
  • End by confirming the decision or next practical action.

What you need to know

Speaking task 2 is an interaction, not a questionnaire recited from memory. You must obtain information in a defined situation, listen to each response, and decide what to ask next. Strong performance combines clear question forms, logical progression, polite adaptation, and enough precision to make the exchange useful.

Pack Ayoub’s 29 recent speaking topics and unlimited AI conversations let you repeat this mechanism across accommodation, courses, services, events, transport, work, and everyday arrangements. This guide gives you a reusable plan plus an original Pack Ayoub dialogue you can transform into several practice versions.

Read the role card as a communication objective

Before speaking, identify who you are, who the other person is, what you need to decide, and which information categories will make that decision possible. If you are asking about a course, the categories might be schedule, level, teaching format, price, materials, enrolment, and cancellation. If you are asking about accommodation, they change to location, room, equipment, rules, costs, and availability.

Do not write ten complete sentences. Note category words and one opening question. This gives the exchange direction while leaving enough attention to hear the answer. Your next question should come from the information still missing or from a detail that deserves clarification.

Build question families you can transform quickly

Prepare functions rather than fixed scripts: ask for a fact, request precision, compare options, verify a condition, explore a consequence, and confirm the final arrangement. Practise each function in several grammatical forms so one forgotten structure never blocks the conversation.

For price, you can ask ‘How much does the course cost?’, ‘Is the material included in the price?’, or ‘Would I pay anything extra for the exam session?’ For time, move from ‘When does it start?’ to ‘How often do sessions take place?’ and ‘What happens if I arrive late?’ The category stays stable while the question becomes more precise.

Turn every answer into a follow-up opportunity

Listen for new nouns, conditions, comparisons, and incomplete information. A useful follow-up can clarify a word, ask for an example, test an exception, or connect the answer to your situation. Short acknowledgement also makes the interaction natural: ‘I see’, ‘That would work’, or ‘In that case’ can bridge to the next question without becoming filler.

If the interlocutor says the room is available ‘most weekends’, do not jump automatically to your next memorised category. Ask which weekends are unavailable or whether booking in advance is required. That adaptation demonstrates listening and advances the practical objective.

Close after you have enough information

A strong ending confirms the decisive detail or next action. Summarise briefly, ask one last verification if necessary, and thank the person. Do not introduce an entirely new subject in the final seconds. The interaction should feel as if it has accomplished something.

During review, count question types, not only questions. Mark whether follow-ups used the actual answers and whether the order moved from general information to decision-making detail. Repeat the same role with changed conditions so the conversation cannot survive through memory alone.

Original Pack Ayoub role-play: choosing an evening course

Practice exercise

You want to improve your spoken French after work. Ask a language-school employee for enough information to decide whether an evening course fits your schedule.

Suggested answer

Good evening. I’m interested in your evening conversation course. Which days are the sessions held? — Tuesdays and Thursdays. — And what time do they start? — At six. — I usually finish work at six. Would arriving fifteen minutes late be accepted? — Occasionally, but we recommend the Saturday group. — I see. How is the Saturday group organised? — One three-hour session each week. — Is the level the same, and can I attend a trial session before enrolling? — Yes, the level is B2 and the first trial is free. — Perfect. Do I need to reserve the trial online, or can I register by phone?

Why this answer works

The learner begins with schedule, then adapts immediately when the proposed time conflicts with work.

The answer about Saturday creates two relevant follow-ups: level and trial conditions. The final question establishes the next action.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should I prepare for speaking task 2?

Prepare information categories and flexible question functions rather than an exact number. You need enough material to sustain the interaction while remaining free to follow the answers.

Can I write complete questions during preparation?

Write one opening question if useful, then use keywords for the remaining categories. A complete script can consume preparation time and reduce listening.

What makes a follow-up natural?

It refers to a detail, condition, or gap in the answer and moves the practical objective forward. A changed question that ignores the response is not a real follow-up.
