What you need to know
Writing task 2 often requires you to recount an experience for a defined audience and purpose. A strong response is not a diary containing everything that happened. It selects the events that make the message useful, controls chronology, and explains what the experience changed, taught, confirmed, or made you recommend.
The Pack Ayoub method separates the response into a narrative spine and a commentary spine. First establish the situation, decisive moments, and result. Then make your evaluation visible with reasons and precise details. This produces a text that both tells and communicates.
Select the story before you write sentences
Write five notes: initial situation, objective or expectation, first decisive event, second decisive event, and final result. Remove background details that do not affect the experience. If the prompt asks for a recommendation, decide exactly what you recommend and to whom before drafting.
The best event is not necessarily dramatic. It is the moment that supports your purpose. In a text about volunteering, a short exchange that changed your understanding may be more valuable than a complete list of duties.
Control chronology and reference
Use time expressions to locate important changes, not to decorate every sentence. Choose verb forms consistently for background, completed events, and later consequences. Make pronoun references explicit when several people appear.
A useful paragraph order is: context and expectation; two or three selected events; result and personal comment. You may combine narrative and comment, but the reader should always know what happened and why the detail matters.
Develop the comment beyond ‘it was interesting’
Name the exact quality: demanding, reassuring, surprising, useful, badly organised, welcoming, or effective. Explain the cause and give proof from the experience. Then connect it to the audience: who would benefit, what should they prepare, or what would you change?
This commentary is where your response becomes more than a sequence. ‘I enjoyed the workshop’ is a reaction. ‘The small group made it easier to ask questions, so I would recommend it to learners who hesitate to speak in a large class’ is an evaluation.
The five-note task 2 plan
- 1
Situation
Where, when, with whom, and in what context did the experience begin?
- 2
Expectation
What did you want, fear, or imagine before the event?
- 3
Turning point one
Which concrete moment began to shape your opinion?
- 4
Turning point two
Which detail confirmed, changed, or complicated that opinion?
- 5
Result and comment
What do you conclude, recommend, or understand now?
Original Pack Ayoub example: a neighbourhood repair workshop
Practice exercise
You attended a free neighbourhood workshop where residents repaired household objects. Write a post describing the experience and explaining whether you recommend it.
Suggested answer
Last Saturday, I took a broken desk lamp to the repair workshop organised at our local library. I expected someone to fix it for me, but the volunteers asked every participant to work with them. At first, I was afraid of damaging the lamp further. A volunteer named Clara showed me how to test the cable safely and explained why the switch was no longer making contact. Twenty minutes later, I had replaced one small part myself. The most surprising moment came when an older neighbour repaired a radio he had owned for thirty years; everyone stopped to hear it play again. I strongly recommend the workshop because it teaches a practical skill instead of simply offering a free repair. The explanations were clear, the tools were provided, and participants helped one another. I would advise newcomers to arrive early, because each repair takes time and the afternoon group filled quickly.
Why this answer works
The text selects two scenes: learning to test the lamp and hearing the neighbour’s radio. Both support the later evaluation.
The recommendation identifies benefits and gives the reader one useful condition—arrive early—instead of ending with a vague positive reaction.
Frequently asked questions
Does task 2 require a true personal experience?
Respond to the given situation with a coherent, credible narrative. Your selected details must serve the prompt, audience, and purpose rather than become an unrelated autobiography.
How many events should I describe?
Choose two or three decisive moments that support the comment. A complete list usually weakens both chronology and evaluation.
How is task 2 different from task 1?
Task 1 focuses on a practical message and the reader’s next action. Task 2 gives more space to selected experience, chronology, and a developed personal reaction or recommendation.
What should AI feedback check first?
Ask whether the narrative answers the prompt, the timeline remains clear, the events support the evaluation, and the final comment is developed. Repair language after those foundations.
